THOUGHTS ON WORLD AUTISM DAY

Today is WORLD AUTISM DAY...
AUTISM is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people and their environment. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.
AUTISM is a spectrum disorder, which means that, while all people with Autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways. Some people with Autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying co-occuring Learning/Intellectual Disabilities and need a LIFETIME of specialist support. People with Autism may also experience over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.
We know that early diagnosis and intervention are paramount in supporting children in learning and living to their fullest potential. We know that Autism is a LIFE LONG Disorder, children with Autism do not out grow their diagnosis when they exit out of the school system. Support and services throughout their life span are required to ensure adults and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders have the quality of life they deserve. Forming partnerships with all stake holders involved and creating a plan/map of options to support individuals with Autism from diagnosis to senior hood is what we need. It's time for AUTISM ACTION...
